Types of Course Materials

MIT OpenCourseWare has brought change in the traditional style of teaching so has it in distributing its course materials. It is available in audio, video, textbook and in six different languages.

Audio/Video Lectures: – This is the back bone of the MIT OCW in my opinion. All the content in this section is amazing. It is mind boggling, that MIT is willing to provide recordings of their class room to anyone in the world let alone for free. There are numerous topics. You can just click on whatever that interests you and start from there. The videos are clear and the instructor voice can be heard clearly as well. The classes are run in a very interactive manner and with proper media equipment a student can feel as if they are present in the class.

One of the complains, I personally had was about the inaudibility of all the questions that students asked the professors, sometimes the professors repeat the courses for the MIT OCW viewers but that is not the case in always.

Online Textbooks: One of the most amazing things about the whole project is the Online Textbooks section Inside the Courses section. When you click the Online Textbooks you will be given a choice to choose a book based on the department. You can also scroll down to plenty of books ranging from Media Science and Technology to Nuclear Science and Engineering. On top of the free textbooks there are also plenty of supplement materials suggested for various courses.

Translated Courses: MIT OCW has made an effort to make knowledge transferred in their schools free. One of the aspects that help us prove this notion is the Translated courses. When you look under courses tab on the right hand side you can see translated courses. Under translated courses there are six main languages which are Traditional Chinese, Portuguese, Turkish, Persian, Korean and Spanish. This has been accomplished with the help of secondary academic institutions. This collaboration shows a very bright future for education.
